
The second-floor corridor of the boys’ hostel was silent except for the distant drip of rain from the roof. Arjun’s room was already prepared: mattress pulled onto the floor, six lengths of rope coiled neatly, the leather belt hanging from the chair, and seven thin leather collars waiting on the study table even though six were already being worn under clothes.
