
The monsoon night pressed against the windows of the boys’ hostel like a living thing. Arjun’s room was stripped ready: mattresses pushed together on the floor to make a wider space, ten lengths of soft rope coiled in a neat pile, the leather belt hanging from the chair back, a small bottle of coconut oil, and two empty collars waiting on the table beside the eight already being worn under clothes.
